What
to Expect
Your massage
or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable and quiet
room. If you like, soft and soothing music can be played to enhance
relaxation. You will lie on a table specially designed to maximize
comfort and therapeutic benefit.
Most massage
and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed, with the client
unclothed and properly draped. However, you may choose to wear the
amount of clothing in which you feel most comfortable. The practitioner
will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table and
cover yourself with a clean sheet.
You and the
practitioner will discuss the desired outcome of your session, which
will determine which parts of your body require massage. A typical,
full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet,
hands, neck and shoulders. You will not be touched on, or near,
your genitals (male or female), or breasts (female). A light oil
or lotion may be used to permit your muscles to be worked, without
causing excessive friction to the skin. All lubricants used will
hydrate the skin and be readily absorbed.
Many people
prefer a one hour, or a one and one-half hour session, for optimal
relaxation. Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the
session. Make yourself comfortable and provide the practitioner
with feedback to maximize your comfort. The practitioner will either
gently move you, or tell you what movement is needed, throughout
the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people simply close
their eyes and completely relax. Others like to talk during their
session. Feel free to ask the practitioner questions about massage
and bodywork in general, or about the particular technique you are
receiving.
After the massage
or bodywork, most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom
from long-term aches and pains due to tension, or repetitive activities.
After an initial period of relaxation, people often experience increased
energy, heightened awareness and greater productivity, which can
lasts for several days. Since toxins are released from your soft
tissues during a massage, it is recommended that you drink plenty
of water after your session to aid in elimination.
